A life sentence
Reporter Bill Sizemore’s exploration of convicted double murderer Jens Soering was a fascinating look inside the near-genius mind of a young con who knows he’ll never get out of prison. What must that feel like? Well, I used the long legs of type as a metaphor for his sentence, running parallel to a timeline of Soering’s hypothetical life expectancy, across the bottom of the spread. I wanted the story to look like a very long time, but I also felt the story was so compelling that people would have no choice but to keep reading! Serve your time, reader!
