In progress 11.24-12.20.11

“Statue of Liberty”  |  43X64″

It’s been a while since I’ve posted new work and it’s not because I haven’t been busy –  it’s that I’m having some difficulty finishing some of them, so I thought I’d post a couple of progress reports.

I came across the material for this during the summer and wanted to create a Statue-of-Liberty-meets-War-of-the-Worlds invader. Triggered by what I think has been the erosion of privacy in our personal lives… every intersection has a camera, our genitals are groped by government goons before we board a flight, cops have infra red cameras that can pinpoint a person’s whereabouts in his own home …

The flattened galvanized tub makes a pretty good eye, but I think it might look better with radiating points above it, like Lady Liberty’s crown. I’m not sure how, or even if, I want to do that.

The “torch” is a military light fixture or sconce of some kind which got shredded along the way to the scrap yard but I’m not happy with the transition from the arm to the torch. Not sure how to make the “hand” which holds it. I have so much junk, and nothing seems to work for that spot…

This is one of those projects that’s taking a while longer because I like the way it’s heading and don’t want to mess it up. So, this just stands around, waiting for me to figure it out…

UPDATE, Dec. 20, 2011: Eureka! Such a simple thing, this finishing touch. A piece of yellow metal, snipped and wrapped around the torch to suggest a hand. I think I’m done.

Hmm… it would be cool if I could wire a working lightbulb into the torch. And I’m still contemplating the radiating crown points… but I’m happy to say that this one no longer looks incomplete or unfinished to me.
