Sunbather, 8.10.12

Scrap art | 18X24″

Every summer, I see women tanning themselves into beef jerky and wonder why.

A friend of mine who has battled skin cancer has launched a web site to inform young women about the dangers of tanning beds and overexposure to the sun.

She asked me if I wanted to illustrate the issue, and when Missy gave me the piece of damaged wood found on a beach, it just came together.

The distressed red-and-white driftwood was donated by my friend, Missy, who schlepped it all the way from Hawaii.

The background is a piece of a hand painted sign that I picked up from a local business’s trash.

The other things I used: a sunglass lens I found a couple weeks ago, bottle cap, found wire and ceiling tin fragments.
