Neon poster 09.17.16
“See Levels Rise,” 18×24″ mixed media
The Hampton Roads chapter of AIGA (Professional Organization for Design) sponsored “Spark,” a juried poster exhibition and silent auction which took place in the arts district (NEON) in downtown Norfolk last night and my poster won the “Best in Show Award.”
One of the judges, Janice Pang: “We particularly love that your design captures the past, present and future of the NEON District, representing the District’s rising, both in creative energy & in water levels. Your design nods to Norfolk’s Navy and tattoo culture while staying current with tattoos of the district’s key symbols. We love that we could keep looking at the design and discover new inside jokes, like the Bob’s Gun Shop tattoo on the sailor’s bicep.”
I hope that AIGA sponsors more exhibitions like this, that are open to students, professionals — and anyone else — because it’s one of the few ways that everyone can participate in the arts district and be a part of the community there.
The joke of this poster is that “Sea level rise” is a main topic of concern in the district, and I have this sailor blowing bubbles underwater…
There are so many symbolic, iconic things in the district that I could’ve included on this swabbie… I should’ve kept going.
