A scrappy story with an excellent message, Gifts of the Magpie tells of a big-hearted bird who loves to find things and loves to help — but confusion over homonyms causes the bird to get everything wrong! Will the magpie ever get it right? Then the bird’s friends take a second look at the gifts and realize that, with a little creativity, the magpie gave them just what they needed. Scrap illustrations provide a feast for the eyes, and young readers will delight in discovering how found objects can be transformed into treasures.

"Magpie" first draft
Everybody works differently, but I’ve found that the most important step in the creative process is to simply BEGIN.
On the morning of April 4, 2018, I was lying in bed, listening to a gentle rain and feeling very antsy, impatient and exhilarated. I grabbed a small note pad, went back to bed and wrote out a simple fable I’d been mulling over that would eventually become “Gifts of the Magpie.” Characters not included in the final book: a wrinkly dog who asked for an iron (received a golf club!) and an impatient bull who wanted his horns but got brass instruments instead! Here are those pages with crude sketches and revisions.
